What the Bible Says About Life’s Purpose

All of us are born dreamers. If you doubt this, look at a small child playing with their toys. Their imagination knows no limits. They see castles in sand and heroes in cardboard boxes. Their world is alive with wonder. Many of us fail to realize the deep connection between imagination, dreams, and the divine visions God plans within us. Imagination is not a childish thing—it is the seedbed of faith. Could it be that one reason God gave us imagination is to prepare us for the plans He has for us?

Jeremiah 29:11 in the HCSB translation says:

“For I know the plans I have for you—this is the Lord’s declaration—plans for your welfare and not for your disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Though these words were originally spoken to the Israelites returning from Babylonian captivity, they echo across the centuries to every believer today. God’s Word doesn’t expire with time. His promises are eternal. He still whispers to each of us: “I have a plan for you.”

And it’s not a small plan. It’s not a plan lost in the routine of our days. It’s not hidden in meaningless repetition or drowned in the noise of busyness. It is epic—crafted by the Creator of the universe Himself.

When Life Feels Meaningless

There are moments when we all wonder, “Is life meaningless?”

We wake up, go through our routines, work hard, and yet something deep inside feels unfulfilled. We scroll through endless distractions, searching for purpose in places that never satisfy. Solomon, one of the wisest men who ever lived, wrestled with this same question in the book of Ecclesiastes. Over and over, he wrote the haunting words:

“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

He had wealth, wisdom, power, and pleasure—and yet he declared, “Life is meaningless” apart from God. What Solomon discovered, and what we often forget, is that the human heart cannot find meaning in what is temporary. Purpose cannot be bought, built, or borrowed—it must be discovered in relationship with the eternal.

The Biblical Foundation of Purpose

So what is a doctrine in Christianity, and how does it help us understand our purpose?

Doctrine, simply put, is the set of truths revealed in Scripture that guide how we live, believe, and worship. It’s the backbone of our faith—the map that keeps us aligned with God’s truth.

When we talk about purpose, we’re not chasing vague feelings or self-made goals. We are grounding ourselves in biblical doctrine—truths like:

When these truths move from our minds to our hearts, we begin to live differently. We begin to see our ordinary routines as sacred opportunities to glorify God.

How to Find Meaning in Life

If you’ve ever asked, “How do I find meaning in life?”, the Bible gives a simple yet profound answer: Seek God first.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:33,

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.”

Purpose begins with pursuit. When we chase after God, He reveals the path before us—step by step. We don’t need to have the full picture. Faith is walking with confidence in the light we have, trusting the rest will unfold in His time.

To find meaning, we must also align our hearts with God’s will. Romans 12:2 teaches us:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

When our thoughts are shaped by Scripture rather than the world, our perspective shifts. We stop measuring success by status or possessions and start measuring it by obedience and love.

Living Beyond the Mundane

God never intended for us to live dull, directionless lives. Every believer is part of a divine story that began before the foundation of the world. You were chosen, called, and equipped to reflect His glory right where you are.

None of them had perfect plans or flawless paths. But each one discovered meaning beyond the mundane when they surrendered their will to God’s.

From Meaningless to Meaningful

The question “Is life meaningless?” fades when we understand who gave us life. The same God who spoke the stars into existence breathed His Spirit into you. You were made to know Him, love Him, and make Him known.

God doesn’t just want you to survive—He wants you to thrive in your calling. To live a life that reflects His grace, His strength, and His purpose.

Conclusion: Becoming God’s Epic

As you seek meaning beyond the mundane, remember—your life is part of God’s epic story. You are not forgotten, overlooked, or unimportant. You are chosen, beloved, and commissioned for something greater than yourself.

This is the heart of Becoming God’s Epic: Fulfilling Your Purpose in Christ, a powerful book by Billy M. Murchison, Jr. It’s more than a book—it’s a roadmap for believers who long to live with meaning and direction. Through Scripture, reflection, and real-life encouragement, Murchison invites readers to embrace the divine purpose already written for them.

He reminds us that each day is an opportunity to live faithfully, intentionally, and courageously—because when we walk in step with Christ, even the ordinary becomes holy.

So lift your eyes above the routine.

There is meaning beyond the mundane.

And the Author of your life is still writing your story—one of purpose, promise, and hope.
